The Orioles have acquired Joe Saunders for the Diamondbacks as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since 1997.

In exchange, Baltimore gave up right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom and either cash or a player to be named later.

Saunders was 6-10 with a 4.22 ERA in 21 starts with Arizona this season.

The Orioles began the day tied for the second American League wild-card spot with Oakland and in third place in the AL East, only four games behind the Yankees.

The Athletics have acquired Jesse Chavez from the Blue Jays.

Oakland sent cash to Toronto for the right-hander.

The A's acquired veteran shortstop Stephen Drew from the Diamondbacks on Monday in exchange for minor league infielder Sean Jamieson.

Drew has a .601 OPS in 135 at bats in 2012. 

Drew has been on the disabled list for much of 2012 due to a broken ankle suffered in 2011.

Right-handed pitcher Ryan O'Sullivan, the player to be named later as part of the Joe Blanton trade, was acquired Thursday from the Dodgers, the Phillies announced.

O'Sullivan will report to Class A Clearwater.

The Red Sox have acquired Pedro Beato to complete Tuesday's trade with the Mets involving Kelly Shoppach.

Beato spent all of 2011 with the Mets, but most of 2012 with Triple-A Buffalo.

Beato has a 10.38 ERA in seven appearances with the Mets this season.

The Red Sox have traded Kelly Shoppach to the Mets for a player to be named later. New York claimed the veteran catcher on waivers. Shoppach is hitting .250 with five homers, 12 doubles and 17 RBIs in 48 games this year.

The Cardinals have traded infielder Tyler Greene to the Astros for a player-to-be-named later or cash considerations. Greene batted .218 with four home runs and 19 RBI in 77 games.

The Red Sox have acquired infielder Danny Valencia from the Twins for minor league outfielder Jeremias Pineda. Valencia will report to Triple-A Pawtucket while Pineda will report to the Gulf Coast League Twins.

The Cubs have traded Jeff Baker to the Tigers for two minor league players to be named later. Baker, who can play multiple positions, hit .269 in 54 games for Chicago. Detroit claimed Baker off waivers and was able to work out a deal with the Cubs.

The Dodgers have acquired Joe Blanton from the Phillies for a player to be named later. The trade was completed after Los Angeles claimed the right-hander on waivers. "It was a little bit of a shock, especially since the trade deadline had passed," Blanton said. "But when you're in trade rumors, you've got to be ready to do whatever. And I was happy if I stayed. At the same time, it will be a new thing, a new adventure to go. And that's always fun."
